Title: Some Database Research Problems in Bioinformatics Speaker: Sergio Lifschitz Abstract: Genomic Databases are very important for molecular biologists and geneticists. Researchers in this area usually store sequences and related annotations in databases aiming at specific biological analysis and queries. However, many important issues still need more discussion. Among others, data models, I/O optimization and database design. Many different research groups have been sequencing distinct organisms and each use its own database, often based on different data models and technologies. Thus, there is also the problem of integrating existing genomic data sources. The goal of this talk is to give an overview of research problems in the bioinformatics from a database point of view. The focus will be on information integration, memory management and distribution/parallelization aspects.
